Alfred Smalley

Alfred Smalley was born 1896 at Underwood and was the son of Frank a butcher and his third wife Annie Wilson Smalley née Leam of Smeath Farm, Underwood. His father had two previous marriages, in 1880 he was married to Mary Ann Beardsley b1861, thier marriages was recorded in the Basford registration district she died in 1884 aged 23 yrs they had two children Ada b1881 and Mabel b1883. His second marriage was in 1890 at Stafford to Georgina Gwilliam b1868 Paddington, with whom he had two further children, they were Norman b1891 and Georgina Elizabeth b1892, Georgina died in 1891 aged 23 yrs ) His father Frank was born in 1858 at Heanor and his mother Annie Wilson Leam was born in 1870 at Selston , they were married in 1896 at St Helens Church at Selston, they had the following children, Alfred b1897, Phillip b1899, Annie Wilson b1900, Mary b1901, Barbara b1903, Frank b1904, Cyril b1908 and Donald b1910 all were born in Underwood. In the 1911 census Alfred Smalley has left the family home he is living at The Ashes, Cromford near Matlock, he is shown as being 14 yrs of age and a student, he is living with his widow aunt Mary Elizabeth Derwin 60 yrs a farmer. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Underwood and are shown as Frank 55 yrs a butcher he is living with his wife Annie Wilson 42 yrs and their children, Norman 20 yrs a bank clerk, Georgina Elizabeth 19 yrs no occupation, Phillip 12 yrs a scholar, Mary 10 yrs a scholar, Barbara 8 yrs a scholar, Frank 7 yrs, Cyril 3 yrs and Donald 1 year of age.
