Family History

Arthur Mansfield was born in 1879 at Gainsborough and was the son of the late John an iron turner and Ann Mansfield née Lightfoot of 43 Tower Street, Gainsborough. His father John was born in 1847 at Longton Staffordshire, he died in 1904 at Gainsborough he was 57 yrs of age, his mother Ann Lightfoot was born in 1849 at Eccleshall, Staffordshire, they were married in 1871 their marriage was recorded in the Stoke upon Trent Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John b1875, Joseph b1876 Arthur b1879, Charles b1880, Alfred b1885, Eliza b1886 and Charles b1887. Arthur was the husband of Fanny (née Woodhouse) Mansfield born 21st December 1892 whom he had married in in 1900 at Gainsborough and the father of Arthur born 1901, Frederick John, born 6th April 1903, Mabel born 23rd July 1905 and Charles Henry Mansfield born 14th September 1907 all were born at Gainsborough, they lived at Angel Row, New Street, Underwood. In the 1911 census the family lived on New Street Underwood with Fanny's mother Sarah Ann Woodhouse 64 yrs of age, also at the address is John Woodhouse 19 yrs a coal miner loader and Arthur Mansfield 31 yrs a coal miner loader, Fanny Mansfield 31 yrs and their children Arthur 10 yrs, Frederick John 7yrs, Mabel 5 yrs and Charles Henry 3 yrs. Following Arthurs death his widow Fanny was awarded a pension of 23 shillings a week commencing on 12th February 1917.

Military History

Private Arthur Mansfield enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he died of wounds, 23rd July 1916, received in the attack on the German positions near Maltz Horn Farm, France during the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at La Neuville British Cemetery, France. Plot 1, Row D, Grave 36.
