Family History

Arthur Ernest Gee was born in 1880 at Gainsborough and was the son of William a store keeper in engine works and Caroline Gee née Hine. His father William was born in 1848 at Bethnal Green and his mother Caroline Hine was born in 1850 at Bedford. They were married on 6th August 1872 at Southill, Bedfordshire, and went on to have the following children, William b1873 and Rosa b1874, both born at Biggleswade, and Arthur Ernest b1880, Maud b1883, Violet b1885, Lillian b1887 Mabel b1889 and Dorothy b1894 who were all born in Gainsborough. Arthur married his wife Agnes Woodhouse in 1905 at Gainsborough. They went on to live at 10 Wood Terrace, North Marsh Road, Gainsborough, and had the following children, Ruth Mirian b1906, Ernest Oswald b1907 and Maud Lilian b1908; all were born in Gainsborough. In the 1911 census the family was living at 10 Wood Terrace, North Marsh Road, Gainsborough, and were shown as Arthur 31 yrs a wood machinist, who was living with his wife Agnes 28 yrs and their children, Miriam 5 yrs, Ernest 3 yrs and Lily 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Arthur Ernest Gee enlisted at Grimsby. He served with the 2/5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was taken prisoner at Arras on April 11th 1917 and subsequently died on 14th April 1917. He is buried at Fontaine-Au-Pire Comunal Cemetery, Nord, France (grave reference I.B.63).

'In Memoriam' entry in Eastwood Advertiser April 1918: "In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte A E Gee, 2/5th Lincolns, died a prisoner of war 14 April 1917."
