Henry Turner was born in 1898 at Sutton in Ashfield he was the grandson of William Turner by the time he enlisted in 1915 both his parents had died and he was living with his grandfather William at 45 Langford Street, Sutton in Ashfield.
Private Henry Turner enlisted on 10th January 1915 at Sutton in Ashfield giving his age as 19 yrs and 228 days, (he was born in 1898 so was only 17 yrs ) he was a coal miner, his next of kin was his grandfather William of 45 Langford Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Posted to the reserves he was mobilised on 5th January 1917, posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 2nd April 1917 on board the troopship HT Cameronia The ship was carrying reinforcements for Mesopotamia and was sunk on 15th April 1917
The Cameronia was torpedoed on 15 April 1917 by the German U-boat U-33 while en route from Marseille, France, to Alexandria, Egypt. She was serving as a troopship at the time and contained approximately 2,650 soldiers on board. The ship sank in 40 minutes, 150 miles east of Malta; taking 210 lives.[the sources report only 140 casualties.Most of the crew and embarked soldiers were picked up by the escorting destroyers HMS Nemesis and HMS Rifleman. The remainder of the survivors had sufficient time to take to lifeboats.
