Family history

He was the son of William Henry and Ursula Grocock and the brother of Lilian Nellie, Kathleen Ursula and Sylvia Ellen Grocock. In 1921, they lived at Calverton, Nottinghamshire. Bernard Grocock and Barbra Helen Reader were married in the Southwell district of Nottinghamshire during the Spring of 1940. She later lived at Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Military history

Grocock was an Observer aboard Stirling I N6001 which took off 2257 29 June 1941 from Oakington to bomb Hamburg. Shot down by a night-fighter (Oblt Helmut Lent 6). No survivors.

Squadron Leader W T C Seale, Sergeant R L Barrett (RAAF), Flight Sergeant B W Grocock, Flight Sergeant R E Walls, Sergeant L Whittle, Sergeant H D Archer, Sergeant M C Brown: killed; aircraft crashed at Stemmermuhlen, Germany.

28 aircraft - 13 Halifaxes, 7 Wellingtons, 6 Manchesters, 2 Halifaxes attacked Hamburg. 4 Stilings, including N6001, were lost along with 2 Wellingtons. 8 civilians were killed, 115 injured and 465 bombed out. A large fire completely destroyed a store containg 650 tons of rice and 200 tons of animal foods. 3 bombers were shot down by night fighters and the rice store may have been set alight by a crashing bomber.
