Samuel Horace Spencer was born in 1894 he was the son of Sam a hosiery factory manager and Clara Spencer née Wass and the brother of William Sydney and Margaret Emily Spencer of Douglas Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Sam was born in 1866 at Loughborough, Clara Wass was born in 1867 at Chelsea, London, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had 3 children. In 1911 the family are living at Douglas Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Sam is 45 yrs and a hosiery factory manager, living with his wife Clara 44 yrs their 3 children, Samuel Horace is 17 yrs and is a lace finisher, they are living with Sam's widowed father in law William Wilson Wass 77 yrs.

Military History

Private Samuel Horace Spencer enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he initially served with the service number 25017 with the Hussars, he was killed in action on 4th October 1917 whilst serving with the 15th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment and is buried at Buried in Aeroplane Cemetery. Belgium
