John Donavan (Donoven) was born in 1897 and was the son of the late William a labourer and Sarah Ann Donavan née Warwick of 3 Blucher Row, Nottingham. William was born in 1860 at Nottingham he died in 1908 aged 48 yrs , Sarah Ann Warwick was born in 1863 at Nottingham, she died in 1910 aged 47 yrs they were married in 1881 at Nottingham and went on to have 6 children, In 1911 John is living at 42 Thoresby Street, Nottingham, he is 14 yrs and a dray boy for the Great Northern Railway, he is living with his married brother William 23 yrs a dipper and his wife Priscilla Donavan 25 yrs and their daughter Sarah Ann 1 year of age, also living at the address is his sister Mary 15 yrs and brother Daniel 9 yrs of age. His pension record card shows his next of kin as his brother William.

Military History

Private John Donoven attested on 10th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his address as 42 Thoresby Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, his next of kin was his brother William of the same address, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 11 months and his occupation as that of a stableman. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for was on 24th March 1916 and reported to the Derby Depot. He embarked from Folkstone on 26th September 1916 landing in Boulogne the same day. On 12th October 1916 he was posted to the 8th battalion Duke of Wellington battalion (West Riding Regiment) He was killed in action on 27th/28th August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
