Family History

Born 1884 at Fakenham in Norfolk, the son of Anthony and Hannah Girdlestone. His Father was a Police Constable and the family had moved to Nottingham at some point prior to 1891. They were living at Firemans Lodge on Burton Road in Nottingham. By 1900 his older brother George had joined the Grenadier Guards as a regular army soldier and served throughout the war returning home in 1918 to 108 Dunstan Street, Netherfield. Sadly their father had been admitted to the Mapperley Asylum in 1900. In 1907 he married Ruby Annie Walkerdine, a Netherfield girl, and they had four children, Florence Harriet born 6th November 1907, Anthony born 11th October 1909, Nellie born 17th August 1911 and Horace born 27th July 1918. In 1911 the family were living at 108 Dunstan Street, Netherfield. Anthony's older brother was also living with them. In 1923 Ruby married again to her brother in law George. His widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week to commence on 6th January 1919.

Military History

He served with No 2 Signal Company, Royal Engineers. He died of pneumonia and is buried at Bagneux British cemetery, Gezaincourt, He was entitled to the Victory and British medals
