Family History

Frederick John Clayton was born in 1894 the son of Edward John a railway goods guard and Sarah Clayton née Robinson of 42 Pearson Street Netherfield Nottinghamshire. Edward John was born in 1869 at Landbeach, Cambridgeshire, Sarah Robinson was born in 1869 at Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, married on 22nd October 1892 at Royston, Hertfordshire, they had 6 children, 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their other survivng children were Florence May b1897 and Thomas Edward b1900. In 1911 the family were living at 42 Pearson Street, Netherfield, Edward John is 42 years a railway goods guard for the Great Northern Railways, and Frederick John 17 yrs is a messenger for the Great Northern railways.

Military History

Prior to the war Frederick had been in the Territorials for 5 years, Private 1086 in the 1/8th Notts & Derby Regiment. He attested at Carlton 17 March 1911 aged 19 yrs and 1 month, he was a railway porter for the Great Northern Railway and was discharged on 13 March 1916 at Grantham. Whilst with them he served in France from 2 March to 28 July 1915 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. On 22 July 1915 he was wounded by a gunshot to the hand and returned home. He then served as Sapper 289135 and Sapper 274649 with the 54th Light railway Operating Company Corps of Royal Engineers. He died of wounds and was buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France. He was eligible for the 1914-15 Star, the British and Victory medals he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) which was gazetted in 'London Gazette,' 13th September 1918.

Obituary published on 21st June 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CLAYTON. – Died of wounds received on duty June 12th, 1918, Sapper F. J. Clayton, R.O.D.R.E., aged 24, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Clayton, 42, Pearson-street, Netherfield. Sleep on, dear son, thy pains are o'er, thy tender heart will ache no more. Loved and respected by all. – From his sorrowing mother and father, sister and brother. “CLAYTON. – Died of wounds June 12th, 1918, Sapper Fred Clayton, R.E.
