Family History

Arthur Maskell was born in 1884 at Thorneywood, Nottingham and was the son of Joseph a brick maker and the late and Harriet Maskell née Priestley of 5, Grove Cottages, Thorneywood Lane, Nottingham. His father Joseph was born in 1842 at Darlaston, Staffordshire, his mother Harriett Priestley was born in 1858 at Diseworth, Leicestershire, she died in 1895 at Nottingham, she was 37 yrs of age, they were married in 1875 at Radford and had the following children, Emma Agnes b1876 Loughborough, their remaining children were all born in Nottingham and were Mary Elizabeth b1876, Catherine 1879, Herbert 1881, Joseph 1884, Gertrude b`885, Arthur b1889, Clara b1891 and James b1895. In the 1911 census Arthur has left the family home and has joined the Army, he is in India with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he is shown as 22 yrs single and a lance Corporal. In the same 1911 census his widowed father Joseph is living at 5 Grove Cottages, Thorneywood, he is shown as being 69 yrs a widow and brick maker, he is living with his daughter Clara 20 yrs a lace jennier, they are living with his married daughter Mary Hayes 34 yrs and her husband and family.

Military History

Company Sergeant Major Arthur Maskell enlisted at Nottingham in C1905 and served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was killed in action on 14th February 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He served for 11 years.
