Family History

George Osborne was born in 1883 at Bulwell and was the son of John a basket maker and Annie Osborne née Birley of 7 Herron Place, Bulwell. His father John was born in 1852 at Basford and his mother Annie Birley was born in 1854 also at Basford, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration area, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 5 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Eliza b1872 John 1875, Hannah b1876, Thomas b1880, George b1883, Fred b1884, Gilbert b1886, Ada b1890 and Ethel b1891 all were born in Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Herron Place, Bulwell and are shown as John 59 yrs a basket maker, he is living with his wife Annie 57 yrs and their children, Eliza 39 yrs a lace curtain maker, George 28 yrs a collier, Gilbert 25 yrs a colliers labourer, Ada 21 yrs a lace curtain maker and Ethel 20 yrs a lace curtain maker. George married his wife Florence Hopkin born 22nd August 1888 in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 71 Ortzen Street, Nottingham and went on to have a daughter Florence Joan born 23rd November 1916. Following his death his widow Florence was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 25th June 1917.

Military History

Private George Osborne enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 31092 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He died of wounds on 9th December 1916 whilst serving with the 6th battalion York & Lancaster Regiment and is buried at Contay British Cemetery, Contay, France grave reference V111 E 8
