Walter was born in 1895 in Shepshed, he was the son of William a hosiery hand and Sophia Corah née Davie of 28 Goldsmith Street Mansfield. His father William was born in 1867 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire his mother Sophia Davie was born in 1867 in Shepshed, Leicestershire. They were married in 1889 their marriage being recorded in the Loughborough registration district. They went on to have 7 children all of whom were born in Shepshed except their final child Eva who was born in Mansfield. They were Leonard b1891, Charles Ernest b1892, Florence May b1894, Walter b1895, Edith b1900 John William Davie b1902 and Eva b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 195 New Victoria Street, Mansfield and are shown as William 44 yrs a cotton hosiery hand, he is living with his wife Sophia 44 yrs and their children , Leonard 20 yrs a cotton hosiery hand, Charles Ernest 19 yrs a cotton hosiery hand, Florence May 17 yrs a tin box hand, Walter 16 yrs a cotton hosiery hand, Edith 11 yrs a scholar, John William 9 yrrs a scholar and Eva 2 yrs.
Lance Corporal Walter Corah enlisted in Mansfield, and served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire ) Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 19th August 1917. He has no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council. His brother Charles Ernest Corah , also served during the 'Great War' he enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Mansfield, he was 23 yrs and 325 days old, he was a hosiery hand and was living at 11 Albert Street, Mansfield , his next of kin was his wife Olivia Lydia Corah (whom he had married on 24th July 1915 ). He was posted to the reserves the following day and eventually mobilised for war on 9th November 1916 and posted to the Army Service Corp on 11th November 1916 later transferring Machine Gun Corps on 1st April 1917. He landed in France on 23rd December 1917 and on 27th March 1918 whilst in action at Arras was wounded by a bullet to the stomach and taken as a prisoner of war . He was treated by the Germans whilst a prisoner of war and was repatriated to England on 12th January 1919. He had been a prisoner for 290 days. He lived until he was 94 yrs of age dying in 1986.
