Family History

Ernest Richardson was born in 1890 the son of the late William a dyer and Ellen Richardson née Brindley of 11 Edwin Street, Nottingham. William was born in 1853 at Derby and died in 1901 at Nottingham aged 49. Ellen Brindley was born in 1856 also at Derby. Married 21/9/1873 at St John’s Church, Derby, they had 14 children 12 surviving infancy - Ellen b.1875, William b.1876, Jane b.1879, Alfred b.1880, Alice b.1882 (all born in Derby) and James b.1884, Thomas b.1886, Henry b.1888, Ernest b.1890, Reuben b.1893, Mary b.1896 and Florence b.1897 (all born in Nottingham). Ernest married Ada Martin, born 8th February 1894, at Nottingham in 1911. They lived at 13, Lees Yard, Leen Side, Nottingham and hsd have the following children - Ernest born 30th October 1911, Reuben born 20th December 1912 and Mary born 8th June 1914. With effect from 8/7/1918, Ada received a weekly pension of 29/7d.

Military History

Ernest Richardson enlisted at Nottingham and landed in France on 14th July 1915. He died of wounds on 29th December 1917 and is buried at Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France. Plot 7. Row D. Grave 12

Four of Ernest Richardson’s brothers died in the Great War. Hundreds of Nottinghamshire families lost two sons, scores lost three and one four but, from this county, only William and Ellen Richardson had five sons killed: Private Alfred Richardson, 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 12th March 1915. He is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France. Private Henry Richardson, 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, died as a prisoner of war on 25th September 1917. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany. Private Thomas Richardson, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 16th September 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Private William Richardson, 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed in action on 17th October 1914. Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.
