Alfred Richardson was born in 1880 the son of William a dyer and Ellen Richardson (née Brindley) of 11 Edwin Street, Nottingham.William was born in 1853 at Derby and died in 1901 at Nottingham aged 49. Ellen Brindley was born in 1856 also at Derby. Married 21/9/1873 at St John’s Church, Derby, they had 14 children, 12 surviving infancy - Ellen b.1875, William b.1876, Jane b.1879, Alfred b.1880, Alice b.1882 (all born in Derby) and James b.1884, Thomas b.1886, Henry b.1888, Ernest b.1890, Reuben b.1893, Mary b.1896 and Florence b.1897 (all born in Nottingham). Alfred Richardson married Emma Elizabeth Johnson (born 26th September 1890) at Nottingham Register Office on 11th April 1914. They lived at 3, Paradise Place, Henry Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. They had a daughter Frances Jeanette born 17th August 1915. With effect from 4/10/1915, Emma Elizabeth was awarded a weekly pension of 15/-. She was living at 10, Budge Row, Mount Street, Nottingham
Alfred Richardson enlisted at Nottingham on 6th August 1901 aged 19 years 11 months. He signed up for 12 years (7 in the line, 5 in reserves). He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He saw service in India from November 1906 and on 5th August 1914 was mobilised. He landed in France on 11th April 1914 and was killed in action on 12th March 1915 during the Batttle of Neuve Chapelle. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France panel 26 and 27.
Four of Alfred Richardson’s brothers died in the Great War. Hundreds of Nottinghamshire families lost two sons, scores lost three and one four but, from this county, only William and Ellen Richardson had five sons killed: Private Ernest Richardson, 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died of wounds on 29th December 1917. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France. Private Henry Richardson, 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, died as a prisoner of war on 25th September 1917. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany. Private Thomas Richardson, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 16th September 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Private William Richardson, 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed in action on 17th October 1914.Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.
