Alfred Ernest Gisby was born in 1885 the son of Benjamin Holland Gisby a kitchen range fitter and Selina Gisby (née Fisher). Benjamin Holland was born in 1848 at Nottingham and died in 1891 aged 43. Selina Fisher was born in 1847 also at Nottingham. Married 12th April 1868 at St Paul’s Church, Nottingham, they had five children all born in Nottingham - Maria Elizabeth b.1869, Albert James b.1877, Violet b.1880, Lillie b.1882 and Alfred b.1885 Alfred’s widowed mother married Joseph Hull on 15th October 1898 at Radford Christ Church. In 1911, Alfred’s mother lived at 70, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham with her husband Joseph Hull, a museum attendant and daughter Lillie Gisby (28) a lace finisher. Alfred Edward married Annie Radford in 1909 at Nottingham. In 1911, they lived at 35 Sutton Street, Ashling Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham and had a son Ernest William Gisby born 1st July 1911. Annie died on 17th October 1915 after which Ernest’s guardian became Mrs Radford (Annie's mother) of 3A St Mark’s Street, Radford.
Alfred Gisby enlisted at Nottingham initially serving with 12th (Pioneer) Battalion and then 17th (Welbeck) Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was serving with the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was taken prisoner on 21st March 1918. He died a prisoner of war on 19th October 1918 and is buried in Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Grave Reference: XX B 9
