William Herbert Henry Smith was born on 23rd June 1896. He was baptised on 16th August 1896 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond, Surrey and was the son of Herbert a labourer and Ellen Violet Smith. William marred Elizabeth (born 28th April 1896). They lived at 42 Prospect Street, East Kirkby. They went on to have the following children, William Joseph Herbert born 13th January 1915 and Gladys Winifred born 9th February 1918 With effect from 14/4/1919, Elizabeth was awarded a weekly pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
