Known as George Henry in 1881, he was the son of Thomas George, an iron turner, and Mary Ann Asher (née Pire). Henry George’s parents were both born in 1854 at Nottingham. Married in 1871, at Radford they had seven children - Eliza b.1874, Mary Elizabeth b.1875, Lucy Ann b.1878, Henry George b.1881, Violet b.1886, Florence b.1887 and Milly b.1887. All were born in Nottingham. In 1911, Henry George's widowed mother Mary Ann Asher was living at 15, Snow Hill, Colwick Street, Nottingham with her daughter Mary Wilson, also a widow, along with her four year old granddaughter Violet Wilson.
Henry George Asher enlisted 10th December 1915 at Nottingham aged 32 years and 10 months. He had previously served in the Lincolnshire Regiment for 5 months prior to being discharged. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters 15th December 1915. He went to France 1st June 1916 and was posted to the 1/7th Battalion on the same day. He was killed in action when a British shell landed in the front line near Bretencourt.
