Family History

Harry Tonge was born in 1894 at Rotherham and was the son of the late Robert Tonge and Mary Tonge née Wright. His father Robert Tonge married his mother Mary Wright in 1884 the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children, William George b1885 Hucknall, Harry b1894 Rotherham, John Herbert b1895 born Normanton and Ivy Osborne b1897 Normanton. His mother re married in 1901 at Nottingham to George John Severn a coal miner, he brought the following child to their marriage John George Severn b1894 , they went on to have 2 further sons Walter Severn b 1902 Hucknall and Fred Severn b1908 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Allen Street, Hucknall and are shown as George John Severn 45 yrs a coalminer, he is living with his wife Mary Severn 49 yrs and their children, William George Tonge (stepson) 26 yrs a coal miner, John George Severn 17 yrs a coal miner, Harry Tonge (stepson) 17 yrs a coal miner, John Herbert Tonge (stepson) 15 yrs a coal miner, Ivy Osborn Tonge (stepdaughter) 14 yrs and Walter Severn 9 yrs and Fred Severn 3 yrs.

Military History

Pte. Harry Tonge, initially served with the service number 158362 in the Royal Engineers, he later transferred to the 16th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Chatsworth Rifles). He was killed by shellfire on 24th December 1916 and is buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Boezinge, grave reference II J 6
