Thomas Loach was born in 1899 the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Maud Loach (née Stacy) of 58, Doncaster Road, Barnsley. Thomas, who died at Barnsley aged 42 in 1914, and Maud were both born in 1872, Thomas at Pilsley, Derbyshire, Maud Stacey at Hucknall. Married in 1891, they went on to have the following children born at Hucknall - John b.1891 Charles b.1894, Henry b.1896, Thomas b.1899. They later had Annie b.1902 at Basford and Doris b.1908 at Barnsley. In 1911, the family was living at 26 George Street, Hucknall. Charles was a boot mender and Henry a collier pony driver whilst Thomas and Annie were at school.
Thomas Loach attested at Barnsley on 13th September 1916 aged 17 years and 6 months. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 4th September 1917 at Pontefract aged 18 years and 5 months. He was posted to the Training reserve and on 31st March 1918 landed in France and was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred to the 13th Battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment on 2nd April 1918 and joined the unit in the field on 6th April 1918. He was killed in action on 12th April 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, Panel 8.
Two of Thomas Loach's brothers were also killed in action serving with 13th Bn York & Lancaster Regiment - Private John Loach 4/7/1916 and Private Henry Loach 7/4/1916.
