Family History

William Shaw (junior) was born in 1895 at Hucknall and was the son of William Shaw (senior) a coal miner hewer and Lois Shaw née Jones of 66, Model Village, Creswell, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. His father William (senior) was born in 1863 at Ashby, Leicestershire and his mother Lois Jones was born in 1865 also in Leicestershire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 7 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, James b1894, William b1895, Annie b1902 and Herbert b1904 all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 66 Model Village, Crewell, Nottinghamshire (now Derbyshire) and were shown as William 48 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lois 46 yrs and their children, James a 17 yrs a coal miner hewer, William 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Annie 9 yrs a scholar and Herbert 7 yrs of age.

Military History

Private William Shaw enlisted on 23rd January 1915 at Chesterfield, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 4 months, his address was 66 Model Village, Cresswell and his next of kin was his father William of the same address. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 20th May 1916 and joined his battalion 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters in the field on 6th June 1916. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
