George Henry was born in 1897 at Normanton on Trent and was the son of Agricultural labourer and shepherd John and Ann Shadey Taylor née Breedon. His father John was born in 1868 at Normanton and his mother Ann Shadey was born in 1873 at Markham, they were married in 1895 registered in Retford, Notts. They first lived in Fledborough where they had their first child, John William born 1896 before moving to Normanton on Trent where they had two more sons, George Henry born1897 and Albert born 1899. Shortly after 1901 they moved once more, residing in Skegby,(near Normanton on Trent ) Notts and had two children, Phyllis May b1904 and Benjamin b1906. . In 1911 The family are living at Skegby (near Normanton on Trent ) and are shown as John Taylor senior 42 yrs was employed as a shepherd, he is living with his wife Ann Shadey 38 yrs and their children, John William 15 yrs a farm labourer, George Henry 14 yrs a farm labourer, Albert 12 yrs a scholar, Phyllis Mary 7 yrs and Benjamin 5yrs , also living with them are two lodgers (farm servants)
Private George Taylor was called up on 16th June 1916 he initially served with the service number 25630 in the 3/4th Lincolnshire Regiment. However, he was serving in the 15th Battalion The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) when he was killed. As his body was never identified or recovered he was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial France.
Article published 27th January 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Son of John & Ann Shady Taylor. He was called up on June 16th last, leaving England for France at the end of September. Killed in the trenches by the bursting of a shell on January 9th. His father is foreman for Mr T.C. Horner of Farndon and he has a brother at Salonica.
