Family History

Harry was the eldest son of Charles Henry and Mary Elizabeth Barratt (née Swain). His father, Charles Henry (Harry), was born in Kirkby-in-Ashfield on 9 August 1870 (J/A/S Basford-Swain). In 1891 he was living in New Annesley with his mother, Fanny, his two sisters Dorothy and Fanny, Mary L Barratt (6) a niece and an uncle, Richard Barratt. Charles, who was head of household, was a coal miner. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Swain, was born on 11 May 1871 (A/M/J Basford-Osborne), the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Swain. In 1891 she was living with her parents in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and working as a dressmaker. Charles and Mary were married on 3 April 1893 at St Wilfrid, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. They had five children who were all born in Kirkby-in-Ashfield or its environs: Dorris (also Doris) b. 28 August 1894 (J/A/S Basford), Hilda b. 1896 (J/A/S Basford), Harry b. 1898 (O/N/D Basford), Ernest b. 1902 (O/N/D Basford) and Wilfred b. 29 December 1903 birth registered 1894 (J/F/M Basford). In 1901 Charles (30), a coal miner and confectioner, and Mary (29) were living on 46 Musters Terrace, off Reform Street, Annesley, with their children Dorris (6), Hilda (4) and Harry (2). They were still living in Annesley in 1911 and now had five children: Doris (16) a post office clerk, Hilda (14), Harry (12), Ernest (8) and Wilfred (7). The CWGC record gives Harry's parent's addrss as Reform Street, Annesley Woodhouse, but by 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled they were living on Forest Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Charles died 17 December 1943 aged 73 and Mary on 11 January 1958 aged 86. Of Harry's siblings: Dorris married Charles E Bostock (b. 4 July 1894) in 1917 (J/A/S Basford) and had at least one child, Audrey b. 29 August 1919. In 1939 Charles, a coal miner, Dorris and Audrey, a lockstitch machinist, were living on Forest Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Dorris died in 1969 (J/F/M Basford). Hilda has not yet been traced after 1911 although she may have married toward the end of the war. Ernest has not yet been traced after 1911. Wilfred married Mary A Stewart in 1934 (O/N/D Basford) and they had at least one child, Harry b. 28 January 1938. In 1939 they were living on Portland Avenue, Annesley Woodhouse; Wilfred was a dairyman. He died in 1969 (O/N/D Basford).

Military History

Lance Corporal Harry Barratt, 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment), was killed in action on 31st March 1917. He is buried at Vendelles Communal Cemetery.(grave ref 4).

CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'He gave up his life for his homefolk and the homeland' Family grave, All Saints churchyard, Annesley Woodhouse: 'A tribute of love to a dear husband and father, Charles Henry Barratt, who passed away December 17th 1943 aged 73 years. In heavenly love abiding. Also a dear wife and mother, Mary Elizabeth Barratt, reunited January 11th 1958, aged 86 years. Also beloved son L.Cpl Harry Barratt, Notts and Derbys, killed in action in France March 31st 1917 aged 19 years.'
