William Frederick Francis Long was born in 1899 the son of William Henry and Rose Antoinette Henrietta Long (née Bernaschina), of 4 Marriott Square, St. James Street, Nottingham. (His mother's grandfather, Antoino Bernaschina, was from Lombardy.) They were married on 3rd January 1899 in Southampton and had a further 3 children - Henry Thomas Edward b.1904, Esther b.1907 and Victor Long b.1908 in Nottingham. In 1911, William Long was living at the Gordon Home for destitute boys at Cranmer Street, Nottingham. In 1915 when enlisting into the Army he gave his address as 4 Marriotts Square , St James Street, Nottingham.
William Long initially enlisted in Nottingham on 18th May 1915 giving his age as 19 although he was actually only 16. He was posted to the 3/1st Nottingham Royal Horse Artillery. His true age was discovered and he was discharged from the Army on 14th January 1916 under Kings Regulations 392 VI A making a mis statement of his age on enlistment. He later re-enlisted into the Lancashires. He is buried in Bertrancourt Military Cemetery (Plot 2. Row F. Grave 27)
In memoriam published 16th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- 'LONG. – In loving remembrance of my dear son, Pte. W. Long (Bill), 1/8th Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action August 16th, 1918, aged 18 years and 10 months. Gone, but not forgotten by his mother, brothers and sister.'
