James Evelyn Brown known as Evelyn was born in 1898 at Sutton on Trent and was the son of John Thomas a farm labourer and Eliza Brown néé Hinchcliffe of Ossington Village. His father John Thomas was born in 1856 at Sutton on Trent and his mother Eliza Hinchliff was born in 1855 also at Sutton on Trent, they were married on 4th May 1876 at All Saints Church, Sutton on Trent. they went on to have the following children, Mary Elizabeth b1877, Annie Louis b1878, John Alfred b1880, Olive Mabel b1882, Amy Helena b1884, Edith Mary b1885, John Wilfred b1886, Lois Eliza b1892, Ethel Rebecca B 1895 and James Evelyn b1898 all were born at Sutton on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living at Ossington village and are shown as John 55 yrs a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Eliza 56 yrs and their son Evelyn 12 yrs a scholar. Military History

Private James Evelyn Brown enlisted at Bosaivain, Manitoba, Canada on 26th October 1915, he gave his age falsely as 19 yrs and his date of birth as 24th May 1896 ( birth was in 1898 ) he stated he was a farmer and his next of kin was his mother Eliza of Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire, England. He was killed in action on 1st October 1916 and has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.
