Richard Newham was born in 1892 at Chesterfield and was the son of Samuel a bricklayer and Ellen Newham, née Legg of 8 Cromwell Street, Carlton. His father Samuel was born in 1862 at Carlton and his mother was Ellen Legg was born in 1861 at Nottingham, they were married on 1st June 1879 and went on to have 15 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Carlton (except Richard born in Chesterfield) they were Fred b1882, Emily b1884, Georg eb1886, Mary b1887, Ada b1889, Richard b1892, Harriett b1894, Sam Henry b1900, Ernest b1903, Lucy b1905 and Nellie b 1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Cromwell Street, Carlton and are shown as Sam Newham 49 yrs a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Ellen 50 yrs and their children, Richard 19 yrs a coal miner, Harriett 17 yrs a cotton doubler, Sam Henry 11 yrs a scholar, Ernest 8 yrs a scholar, Lucy 6 yrs and Nellie 4 yrs.
Private Richard Newham enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carlton, he initially served with the service number 3698 in the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 11th November 1914 and was killed in action whilst serving with the 143rd company, Machine Gun Corps. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 154-159.
