Family History

Frederick Herbert Northen was born on 30th August 1891 at Thorpe by Water and was the son of Thomas Samuel a farmer and Mary Elizabeth Northen of Thorpe by Water, Rutland. His father Thomas was born in 1855 at Thorpe by Water and his mother Mary Elizabeth Colwell was born in 1855 at Liddington, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Uppingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, John William b1886, George Edward b1890, Frederick Herbert b1891, Margaret May b1894 and Daisy Eva b1896 all were born at Thorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Thorpe by Water and are shown as Thomas 56 yrs a highways surveyor, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 56 yrs and their children, John William 25 yrs a farmers son, Margaret May 17 yrs at home and Daisy Eva 15 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census we find Frederick Herbert has left the family home and is living as a boarder at the Minster Precinct at Peterborough he is living with Mary Nattrass 44 yrs a widow and boarding house keeper, he is shown as being 19 yrs single and a clerk.

Military History

Corporal Frederick Herbert Northen enlisted at Spalding shortly after war was declared and initially served with the service number 11111 in the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he went to France in July 1915 and transferred to the 6th battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was mortally wounded at Glencourse Wood, Ypres, on August 11th, 1917. He died the following day in No. 44 Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Article published 5th September 1917 in the Newark Advertiser Son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Northen of Thorpe-by-Water, Rutland. Born at Thorpe on August 30th, 1891 and educated at Market Harborough Grammar School. He entered Messrs. Barclays Bank at Peterborough when he was 16 years of age and afterwards was removed to Newark. At both towns he was a prominent member of the leading cricket clubs, also a devotee of hockey. On the outbreak of war he at once joined the 7th Lincolnshires and went to France & Belgium with them in July 1915. He fought with the Lincolns until Dec. 1915 and then with the 6th Berkshires until the date of his being mortally wounded at Glencourse Wood, Ypres, on August 11th, 1917. He died the following day in No. 44 Casualty Clearing Station. His brother Pte George Edward Northen joined the 7th Lincolnshires with him and was killed on March 2nd, 1916. Another brother, Lt. T.H. Northen, Leicestershire Regt. was severely wounded in 1915.
