He was the son of John and Edna Parr. John was a farmer and in 1901 he and Edna were living on Principal Street, Farnsfield. Two daughters, Dorothy (3) and Kathleen (2) were in the home at the time of the census but not their son, John Richard, who is, however, recorded in the 1911 census. The family had two female servants. In 1911 they were still in Farnsfield and three of their four children were at home; John Richard (14), Kathleen (12) and George Leonard (9), who had been born shortly after the 1901 census. John employed one female servant. The census confirmed that John (58) and Edna (48), who had been married for 15 years, had had four children all of whom were still living.
HMS Powerful, an armoured cruiser, was laid down in 1895 and commissioned in 1897. During the South African War of 1900 a Naval Brigade from the ship played a significant role in the relief of Ladysmith when the guns from HMS Powerful were taken overland to assist in raising the siege. Powerful was rendered obsolete by the Dreadnought Class ships and in 1915 was taken out of active service and used as a training ship. George was under training when he died from disease and was buried in Plymouth Devonport and Stonehouse Cemetery, Plymouth, Devon, now Plymouth (Ford Park) Cemetery.
