George William Hill was born in 1888 at Gainsborough and was the son of William a joiner and Mary Jane Hill, née Sunman of 50, Sleaford Rd., Newark. His father William was born in 1860 Morton, Lincolnshire and his mother Mary Sulman was born in 1860 Leicestershire they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Susan Ellen b1886 Haxby, Lincolnshire, George William b1888 Gainsborough John b1889 Gainsborough, Charles Ernest b1893 Newark and Arthur b1895 Gale Burton, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 50 Sleaford Road, Newark and are shown as William 51 yrs a joiner he is living with his wife Mary Jane 51 yrs and their children Charles Ernest 18 yrs a butchers assistant and Arthur 16 yrs a whitesmith apprentice. In the same 1911 census we find that George has left the family home, he is shown as being 23 yrs and single and a grocers shop assistant, he is boarding at 205 Albert Road, Retford with John Fred Lindley 33 yrs a miller and his family.
Private George William Hill enlisted at Grimsby On 25th January 1915 and served with the 14th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. He landed in France in July 1915 He was killed while stretcher bearing on 6th November 1917 and is buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His brother Rifleman Arthur Hill enlisted on 15th November 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 123 days, and his address as 50 Sleaford Road, Newark,his next of kin was his father William of the same address , his occupation was that of a whitesmith. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and embarked for France on 6th April 1916 arriving at Etaples, France on 7th April 1916. On 24th August 1916 he was admitted to 14th casualty clearing station with a shell wound to his head, he was transferred tot he 10th General Hospital Rouen and on 30th August 1916 he was returned to England via the Hospital Ship 'Panama'. Following treatment and recovery he was once again returned to the Western Front embarking from Southampton on 8th December 1916 and disembarking at Le'Harve on 9th December. He was posted to the 9th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps on 12th December. He was killed in action on 21st March1918 and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. Pte George William Hill Retford Times 28th December 1917 The above is a photograph of Pte George William Hill, RAMC, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W Hill, Newark who has been killed in action in Belgium. The deceased who was 30 year of age, enlisted in January 1915 and has seen two and a half years’ service in France and Belgium. He came home on leave last August. He met his death on October 6th whilst stretcher bearing. He has relatives in Retford and made many friends in the town during the six years he was with Mr C W Gladish, grocer and provision merchant.. The greatest sympathy is felt for the parents and friends in their bereavement.
