Born Ecclesall Bierlow (Now part of Sheffield) First Quarter 1880 Son of Michael and Margaret Smith. On 1881 Census, he is living with his parents, step sisters Maggie and Mary E. Pents and brother James at Back 23 Langdon Street, Ecclesall Bierlow. His father is listed a joiner. Family not found on Census after this date. Thomas married Sarah J. Bates (born 23rd September 1873) in the Second Quarter 1915 in Nottingham they lived at 17 Oakland Street, Berridge Road, Hyson Green, his wife brought two children to the marriage, Frederick Bates born 9th June 1903 and Annie Bates born 11th January 1906. Following his death his widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 24th April 1918.

Military History

Private Thomas Francis Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Believed killed during Third Battle of Ypres at Polygon Wood on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A
