James Lancaster was born on 18th December 1877 at Wolston Heath, Warwickshire, he was baptised on 23rd Janauary 1878 at Wolston, Warwickshire , he was the son of the late Robert Laurie Lancaster a barrister and Euphemia Margaret Lindsay McNaught . Robert was born in 1843 at Burton upon Inwell, he died in 1882 at Wolston, Euphemia Margaret Lindsay McNaught was born in 1851 at Glasgow they were married on 17th April 1873 at Wolston, Warwickshire, they had 5 children, John Cecil born 1874, Beatrice born 1876, Euphemia born 1876, James born 1878 and Maud born 1879. James emigrated to British Columbia, Canada on 1st November 1904, where he met and married his wife Margaret Ormande Livingstone, whom he married on 18th November 1904 at Cowichan, British Columbia By 1906 James and his wife returned to England, in 1906 they had a son Robert Clement born 1906 Nottingham, in 1910 they had a further son James Donald born 1910 in Monmouthshire and finally returned to Nottingham where they had their son James Stewart born 1914 at Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family were living at The Woodlands, Blaina, Monmouthshire, James Lacaster 33 yrs is a mining engineer, he is living with his wife Margaret 24 yrs and their two sons Robert Clements 5 yrs and James Donald 1 year of age. James probate was proven on 26th August 1915 in London, James Lancaster of Englelholme, Private Road, Sherwood, died 8th May 1915 whilst on active service in Europe, his effects of £16,908 6 shillings and 5 pence were left to his solicitor Percival Richardson.
James Lancaster in 1891 was billeted in the Stubbington House Naval College although at some changed direction as his regiment was the Monmouthshire Regiment 3rd Battalion, James reached the rank of Captain His brother, John Cecil Lancaster had reached the rank of Major and by 1914/15 and was commander of the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire’s. It is quite a coincidence that both brothers were killed on the same date, 8th May 1915, john Cecil being killed in action and buried at Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery, Belgium and James being commemorated on the Ypres Memorial, Belgium. James’ address in probate was Englholm on Private-road, Sherwood, Nottingham and John Cecil’s, Allesley, Warwick.
