Family History

Clarence Leonard Vann was born in 1897 at Skegby, he was the son of Nathan Vann a coal miner deputy and Charlotte Alice Vann née Fletcher of Fern Villas, Fackley Road, Stanton Hill, Mansfield. His father Nathan was born in 1861 at Colorton, Leicestershire, his mother Charlotte Alice Fletcher was born in 1865 at Madeley, Shropshire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration distrct they had 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Fern Villas, Fackley Road, Stanton Hill, Mansfiled Nathan 50 yrs is a coal mining deputy, he is living with his wife Charlotte Ann 45 yrs and their children, Arthur William Fletcher 22 yrs an insurance agent, Thomas Wallace Cecil 17 yrs a coal miner ganger, Clarence Leonard 13 yrs a scholar, Adela Evelyn 7 years of age.

Military History

Private Clarence Leonard Vann attested on 24th February 1916 giving his age as 18 yrs and 8 months, he was a student living at City of Leeds training cottages, Headingly, Leeds , his next of kin was his father Nathan Vann. He was posted to the reserves on the same day , he was mobilised for war on 8th May 1916, he embarked from Folkstone on 11th October 1916 and landed the same day at Boulogne. He was posted to the 14th battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 30th August 1917 and is buried at St Patricks Cemetery, Loos, France.
