Family History

John Joseph Hawarden was born in 1897 at Queenstown, Cork and was the son of Frederick Edward an electrical wireman and the late Kate Hawarden. His father Frederick Edward was born in 1864 at Winchester, he had the following children, John Joseph b1897 Queenstown, Percy b1901 Sherness and Arthur b1904 Chatham, Kent. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at Shotley Street, Shotley, Suffolk and are shown as Frederick Edward 47 yrs an electrical wireman at Naval Dockyard, he is living with his wife Annie 47 yrs (born 1864 Maidstone, Kent ) and his children John 14 yrs a scholar, Percy 10 yrs a scholar and Arthur 7 yrs, his father states he has been married for 4 yrs and has had no children with his current wife. The family later lived at 13, Lawrence Place, Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Private John Joseph Hawarden enlisted at Chelsea London whilst residing at Battersea, London he served with the 1st battalion The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th June 1917 and is buried at St Leger British Cemetery, Grave Reference: F 19

His father Frederick Edward Hawarden enlisted on 5th February 1917 at Newark, he gave his age as 53 yrs and 2 days and his address as 13 Lawrence Place, Newark, his next of kin was his son John Joseph Hawarden, he served with the Inland Waterways Transport Company, Royal Engineers. He was discharged on 11th March 1919.
