Joseph Pepper was born in 1897 at Thringstone, Leicestershire and was the son of the late George Henry Pepper a coal miner and Harriett Julia Pepper née Martin. His father George Henry was born in 1861 at Thringstone and died in 1901 aged 40 yrs, his mother Harriet Julia Martin was born in 1865 at Thringstone, she died in 1906 in Nottingham, they were married in 1889 at Leicester, the had the following children, Thomas William b1889, Maud Bertha b1891, Lily b1895, Joseph b1897, Amelia b1900 and Edith Pepper b1902 all were born in Thringstone. In the 1911 census Joseph and his siblings are living at 62 George Street, Hucknall they are living with Joseph Burton, 49 yrs single and a coal miner hewer, they are shown as William Pepper 21 yrs a coal miner, Lilly Pepper 16 yrs a general servant, Joseph Pepper 14 yrs a colliery joiner underground, Amelia Pepper 11 yrs a scholar and Edith Pepper 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Joseph Pepper enlisted on 29th August 1914 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 305 days, he was living at 52 Belvoir Street, Hucknall, he was a coal miner and his next of kin was his father Henry of the same address, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 6376. He landed in France on 25th September 1916. He was serving in the 6th company, machine gun corps when he was killed in action, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 10
