Albert Saunders

Albert was the son of Herbert and Sarah Saunders. According to the information given on the census between 1881 and 1911 Herbert and Sarah had eight children: John, Sarah, Jane, Lily, William, Ellen, Albert and Ethel. All the children were born in Nottingham. In 1891 Herbert (39, b. Bingham) and Sarah (44 b. Strelley) were living at 4 St Paul's Street, Radford. Herbert was a coal miner. All eight children were at home on the night of the census: John (18) a coal miner, Sarah (16) and Jane (14) who were both cotton winders, Lily (12), William (10), Ellen (7), Albert (4) and Ethel (1). By 1901 the family was living at 4 Hogue Street, Old Radford. Only three of the children were still living at home with their parents: William (18) a coal miner-ganger underground, Albert (12) and Ethel (10). Also in the household were Herbert and Sarah's two grandsons, Herbert Saunders (6) and John Saunders (4) who were their daughter Jane's children. Jane was married to Henry Hancock (marriage registered 1901 J/F/M) and they were living at 6 Abbey Buildings, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. Albert's mother, Sarah, died aged 54 in 1901 (death registered J/A/S Nottingham). By 1911 the widowed Herbert was living at 6 Abbey Buildings, Old Radford, with his Albert (23), a wood sawyer, and Ethel (21), a cap winder in a cotton mill. Albert married Emily Pike in 1914 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham). They had two daughters, Maggie (b. 1915, J/A/S) and Elsie (b. 1916, O/N/D) who died on 26 August 1917 aged 10 months. Albert's nephew Herbert Saunders served with the 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (265122 Lance-Corporal) and was killed in action 1 July 1916 (Thiepval Memorial).
