Andrew was the youngest son of John a gasworks labourer and Susan Alice Shaw (née Parr) of 8 Tennyson Street, Nottingham. His father was born in 1852 at Calverton, Nottinghamshire, his mother in 1857 at Sherwood. Married in 1876, they had ten children seven surviving infancy - John Franklin b.1878, Amy b.1880,Ernest b.1885, Ethel b.1887 Laura b.1890, Edward b.1892, Andrew b.1894. In 1911, the family was living at 55 Brassey Street, New Basford. Ernest was a general labourer, Laura a wool comber and Edward a cotton doubler. Also living at the same address were their married daughter Ethel Hayes and her husband Albert, a coal miner, and children Ethel Laura (2)and Cyril (6 months) Hayes.
Andrew Shaw enlisted at Nottingham, initially serving (30694) in the Sherwood Foresters. He was fighting with ‘B’ Company, 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment when he became a prisoner of war. He died in captivity at Metz from inflammation of the lungs. He is buried in Chambieres French National Cemetery, Metz, France, Grave Reference: 364
