Hiram Elliott was the son of Anthony, a coal miner, and Zillah Elliott (née Wardle). Anthony was born in 1853 at Alfreton, Zillah in 1855 also at Alfreton. Married 25/4/1878 in the Belper Registration District, they had three sons. Hiram’s brothers were Charles b.1878 at Alfreton, Frederick b.12/2/1882 at Bolsover. Hiram was baptised at Whayley Thorns, Derbyshire, the family's home at the time, on 8th August 1888. His brother Fred was also baptised at the same ceremony. Hiram married Ada Bettridge (born 1891 Hucknall) in 1906 at Hucknall and in 1911 they lived at 33, Marlow's Yard, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Four children were born to the couple but none survived until April 1911. In 1911, Hiram’s parents were living at parents are living at 42 Langwith Road, Shirebrook with their son Charles, a miner.
Hiram Elliott enlisted at Mansfield. He sailed for Gallipoli in early July 1915, arriving at Mudros Bay on August 7th. He fell two days later in an advance on Turkish positions near Hetman Chair. More than 100 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters died in this action during which all their officers were either killed or wounded.
