Family History

Norman Martin was born 1893 at Firbeck he was the only child of the late James, a farmer and inn keeper, (died 1910) and Eliza Martin née Holmes of 1 Caledon Road, Sherwood, Nottingham James Martin was born in 1858 at Arnold, Nottingham, he died in 1910 aged 52 yrs, Eliza Holmes was born in 1868 at Letwell, Yorkshire, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Worksop registration district, In 1901 they lived at Firbeck and later at 1 Caledon Road Sherwood Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are still living at Firbeck, Eliza 42 yrs a widow an inn keeper and farmer, she is living with her son Norman 18 yrs apprentice colliery engineer, they are living with 2 servants.

Military History

private Norman Martin attested at Sheffield on the 4th September 1914, giving his age as 21 yrs and his occupation as that of a draughtsman, joining the Coldstream Guards. He embarked for France on 22nd Dec, 3 ½ months later. On the 9/12/1915 he was transferred to 2nd Guards Brigade Machine Gun Coy. By 14/3/1916 he had been returned to UK and hospitalized to Norfolk War Hospital, where he showed signs of tubule of the lung and after a short time was discharged, no longer physically fit for war service on 28th June 1916 (Silver Badge no. 18565). He was buried in the churchyard at Firbeck with a private cross (none Commonwealth War Graves Commission) headstone.
