Frederick Laurie was born in 1895 the son of James an electrical engineer and Elizabeth Winifred Laurie née Connor. His father was born in 1850 at Glasgow, his mother in 1863 at Manchester. Married in 1882 in the Sheffield registration district, they had twelve children, eight surviving infancy - Mary b.1885, Winifred b.1887, James b.1888, William b.1890, Thomas b.1893, Frederick b.1895, Samuel b.1898 and Annie b.1901. All were born at Sheffield apart from Annie who was born in Sneinton, Nottingham. In 1911, Winifred and five of her children lived at 6, Pomfret Street, Sneinton. William was a pit man and Thomas a railway cleaner, whilst Samuel and Annie were still at school. In 1911, James was boarding at Grantham with Joseph and Emma Coldron.
Frederick Laurie enlisted at Nottingham initially serving (23638) in the Sherwood Foresters. He later transferred to the Leicesters and was killed during the Battle of Dujaila in Mesopotamia.
