He was the husband of Eleanor Maude (née Ford) Martin and the step father of Edward, William and George Ford. In 1911, Eleanor and her three sons were living with her parents at 18, Pierrepont Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham where William Martin was a lodger. William and Eleanor married 20/12/1913 and lived at 40, Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton whilst William was in the army. Eleanor later lived at 1, Bolton Yard, Manvers Street, Sneinton.
William Martin had served before the Great War (time expired) and re-enlisted at Nottingham 14/10/1914. He was promoted lance corporal 20/10/1914 and lance sergeant 18/9/1915. He was discharged 'no longer fit for military service' 28/3/1916 and died in Nottingham. With effect from 12/4/1916, Eleanor received a weekly pension of 28/6d for herself and three children.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 11/4/1917: 'Martin. In loving memory of my dear husband, Sergt. W. Martin, died April 11th 1916. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. Duty nobly done. Wife and children.' Martin gave his age as 42 years 278 days upon enlistment in 1914 but the 1911 Census cites 42. No CWGC record Research by David Nunn
