He was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Mellors and the brother of George Frederick, Miriam, Hannah, Jane and Thomas Mellors. In 1891, they lived at 56, Newgate Lane, Mansfield Nottinghamshire and in 1901 at 25, Gladstone Street, Rainworth, near Mansfield. He was the husband of Mabel Elizabeth (née Needham, later Claxton) Mellors.
