Herbert Barrowcliff was born in 1893 the only son of Elizabeth Ann Barrowcliff. In 1914, they lived at 55, Red Lion Street, Narrow Marsh, Nottingham. Herbert married Margaret Jackson in 1914 and they lived in Knotted Alley, Narrow Marsh. Margaret married James W Laughton at Hartlepool in 1919 and they had three children - Florence, James and Jean.

Military History

Herbert Barrowcliff enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry at West Hartlepool 25/8/1914 standing 5' 5" and weighing 148 lbs. He was discharged (medically unfit) in December 1914. He either re-enlisted or was conscripted at Nottingham and served with 'V' 34th Trench Mortar Battery. St. Nicholas British Cemetery Grave Reference: I K 1
