Thomas was born in 1888, the son of John and Elizabeth Bancroft nee Daws. His father John was born in 1861 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and his mother Elizabeth Bower Daws was born in 1867 in Heanor, Derbyshire. They were married in 1885; marriage recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have the following children all of whom were born at Heanor: William b1886, Thomas Horace b1888, Beatrice b1890, Charlotte Ethel b1892 and Bernard b1895. His father John, a licensed victualler, died in 1909 (Nottingham) at the age of 48. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Shoulder of Mutton, Radford Road, Basford, and are shown as Elizabeth 44 yrs a widow and licensed victualler who is living with her children William 25 yrs a joiner, Thomas Horace 23 yrs a butcher, Beatrice 21 yrs no occupation, Charlotte Ethel 19 yrs a shop assistant and Bernard 16 yrs a butchers assistant. Thomas Horace married Ethel Meakin in 1911 in Nottingham; they had a daughter Evelyn born 1912 (Nottingham). His mother, Elizabeth Bancroft, was still landlady of the Shoulder of Mutton when she died on 24th March 1915.
26th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish). Thomas originally enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, He was killed in action on 9th June 1917 and buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy (special memorial V.G.13).
