He was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Smith and the brother of William Smith a retired member of the Royal Field Artillery. The family lived on Rutland Terrace Kimberley Nottinghamshire.
He was either a reservist recalled to his unit or a regular soldier who served initially with 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters embarking 11/11/1914. He was killed with 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters: ‘For the greater part of August the battalion were in the trenches facing and the continual mining operations were somewhat wearing to the nerves of those who had to sit on top and wait for the explosion to take place. During this period the enemy blew upwards of seven mines in this sector, but on the whole the battalion was lucky and escaped with comparatively few casualties.’ (Source Colonel HC Wylly 1st and 2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters In The Great War)
