Family History

Samuel was born in 1883 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Harriett Mason née Reynolds of 17 Railway Side, Presic Road, Sutton In Ashfield, his father William was born in 1863 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Harriett Reynolds was born in 1868 at Wellington, Shropshire, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration District, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents are residing at 17 Railway Side, Presic Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Samuel married Ethel Cresswell (born 6th February 1885) on 21st October 1905 at St Marys Church, Sutton in Ashfield, he was the father of John Leslie, born 3rd June 1906, Wilfred 1st December 1907 and Percy born 16th September 1910 In 1911 they lived at 96 Cochrane Terrace Stanton Hill. Mansfield Samuel 28 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Ethel 26 yrs and their 3 children. Commencing 17th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.

Military History

Private Samuel Mason enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the Royal Army Medical, he died of wounds on 11th December 1917 at Salonica, he is buried at Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
