William Welch Tomkinson was born in 1896 at Lenton and was the only son of William a butcher and Augusta Tomkinson née Welch of 24 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham. His father was born in 1857 at Bingham and his mother Augusta Welch was born in 1856 also at Bingham, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District. In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham and are shown as William 54 yrs a butcher, he is living with his wife Augusta 55 yrs and their son William 14 yrs a scholar. William's probate was proven at Nottingham (with will) on 16th April 1918 and shows him as William Welch Tomkinson of 65 Castle Boulevard, Nottingham Private in H.M. Army died on 23rd June 1916 in France his effects of £180. 4 shilling and 5 pence were left to Ann Horton a widow.

Military History

Private William Welch Tomkinson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 28th May 1915 and was killed in action on 22nd June 1916, he is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery, France grave reference V.A.3
