Family History

William was the fifth of six children born to William and Evangeline Wales. They had four daughters, Catherine, Bessy, Marjorie, and Helen, followed by two sons, William and Robert. William was a farmer, and lived for many years in Newport Pagnall, where all of his daughters were born. The family moved to Halloughton in the late 1890s. The 1901 census records William senior as being a farmer. The 1911 census records that the family had moved to Epperstone, with just Helen aged 15, William aged 11, and Robert aged 8 still living at home. William senior had retired. His occupation is shown as "Assistant Overseer of the Poor". He is also recorded as being a Parish Councillor.

Military History

Private William Henry Brett Wales enlisted at Kettering and initially served with the service number 136164 in the 53rd battalion Middlesex Regiment. He was serving with the 7th battalion Royal Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 21st August 1918. He is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
