Fred Newton was born in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. There is a record of a Fred Nix (10 b. Kimberley), Ethel Nix (7 b. Kimberley) and Louisa Nix (34) single, lodging on Glasshouse Street, Nottingham, in 1891. Fred married Alice Staniforth in 1914 (Frederick Newton/Alice Stanforth O/N/D Nottingham). The WW1 Pension Ledger names his widow and two children: Hilda Newton b. 1908 and Mabel Newton b. 1913 (d. 1928). The births of Alice's daughters were probably registered as: Hilda Newton Staniforth b. Carrington (A/M/J Nottingham) and Mabel Staniforth (J/A/S Nottingham, mother's maiden name Staniforth). In 1911 Alice Staniforth (26) and Hilda Newton-sic (3) were living off Simkin Street, Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham, in the home of Emma Staniforth (52). Fred has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census.
2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) According to the medal rolls index card he entered theatre (Balkans) on 31 December 1915. He was killed in action on 11 December 1917 and is buried in Ribecourt British Cemetery, France (grave ref. I.B.18). Fred qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. CWGC - History of Ribecourt British Cemetery (extract): 'Ribecourt was taken on the 20th November 1917 by the 6th Division, but at the conclusion of the Battle of Cambrai it remained practically on the British front line; it was lost in March 1918 and recaptured by the 3rd and 42nd (East Lancashire) Divisions on the following 27th September. Ribecourt British Cemetery was begun by the 6th Division in November 1917 and used at intervals until March 1918; and further burials were made in September and October 1918.' (www.cwgc.org)
