Family History

John Wood was born in 1885 the son of George Henry, a stone pavier and Susannah Wood (née Denman). His father was born in 1858 in Nottingham his mother Susannah Denman in 1862 also at Nottingham. Married in 1879, they had nine children. John’s siblings surviving infancy were George b.1880, Samuel b.1887, Beaty b.1896 and Ada b,1899. In 1901, the family was living at 8 Coldham Street, Nottingham.

Military History

John Wood enlisted at Darlington on 27th February 1905 aged 18 and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps in India between 8th January 1907 and 5th March 1913, being promoted to Corporal on 1st August 1912. He landed in France on 13th August 1914 and died of enteric fever at No.3 General Hospital, St. Nazaire. He is buried in St. Nazaire (Toutes-Aides) Cemetery, Grave Reference: B.30.
