John Thomas Hill

John Thomas was the son of John Thomas Hill and his wife Sarah Ann Hill nee Daft His father John Thomas Hill was born in Grimston, Leicestershire, on 26 April 1864 and his mother Sarah Ann L Daft in Nottingham in about 1866. They were married in 1886 (J/A/S Nottingham) and by 1911 had had 14 children of whom only ten survived. Eleven children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911: Caroline Ann b. 1887 (A/M/J Nottingham), Herbert (probably Herbert John b. 1888 O/N/D Nottingham), John Thomas b. 1892 (A/M/J Nottingham), Clara b. 1895 A/M/J Nottingham), Adelaide Elizabeth vb, 1896 (O/N/D Nottingham), Wallace James b. 7 April 1898 (A/M/J Nottingham), Fred (probably Alfred Henry b 1901 JU/A/S Nottingham) May birth registered 1903 J/F/M Nottingham, Lily b. 26 January 1907 (J/F/M Nottingham), Herbert b. 17 June 1908 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Ivy b. 1910 (probably O/N/D Nottingham). All the children were born in Nottingham. It is likely that Herbert (Herbert John) who was born in 1888 died sometime after the 1901 census, before the birth of Herbert in 1908. In 1891 John Thomas senior (26), a pork butcher, and Sarah (24) a lace clipper, were living at 4 Great Eldon Street, Sneinton with their two children Caroline (4) and Herbert (2). By 1901 they had moved to 7 Kemps Cottages, Sneinton, and now had six children: Caroline (14) a cutter out of aprons, Herbert J. (12), John T. (9), Clara (5), Adelaide E. (4) and Wallace J. (2). The family was living at 50 Leighton Street, Sneinton, in 1911. John Thomas senior (46) was now working as a journeyman pork butcher. All ten of John Thomas and Sarah Ann's surviving children were in the home on the night of the census: Caroline Ann (24) a gloves cutter, John Thomas (18) a banksman at a pit, Clara (15) a blouse tucker, Adelaide (14) a blouse finisher, Wallace (12), Fred (9), May (8), Lily (4), Herbert (2) and Ivy (4 months). Sarah Ann predeceased her husband, John Thomas. In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register, he was living at 36 St Matthias Road, Sneinton, with two unmarried children, Wallace James a coal miner hewer, and Lily a shirt machinist. Also in the household was Winifred Lucy Smith (b. 24 April 1904) a tailoress machinist.
