He was the husband of Alice Russell (née Edwards). In 1911 they lived at 78 Moffat Street, Southampton Street, St Ann's Nottingham.
Pte. Russell served in Mesopotamia, but when Turkish and Russian armies attempted to take the key oil town of Baku on the Caspian Sea British forces were hurried there and took the town. There was considerable fighting before the British withdrew and the Red Army took control. There was a severe outbreak of typhus in the area, and Pte. Russell died from its effects on 05/03/1919. His name was commemorated on the Baku Memorial.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd March 1919 :- “RUSSELL. – On March 5th, of typhus fever, at Russia. Pte. George Russell, the dear and loving husband of Alice, and loving son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards. And I had longed for a safe return.
